About Jamnagar

Jamnagar is a coastal town of Gujarat in India. It was founded by "Jam Raval" in 1540 A.D. as the capital of the princely state of Nawanagar. It was so named after the ruler who called themselves "Jamshree". The city was built around the small Ranmal Lake in the centre of which there is a small palace that can be reached by a causeway. Jamnagar is having the only Ayurvedic University in India. The old part of the town has a number of interesting buildings such as the "Darbar Gadh", "Mandvi Tower", "Jam Bungalow". Darbar Gadh was a gathering place where the Maharaja of Nawanagar used to hold public audience. Jamnagar is the home town of world famous cricketers His Royal Highness Jam Ranjitsinhji, Duleepsinhji and Ajay Jadeja. The "Bala Hanuman Temple" is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for the continuous enchanting of "Ram Dhun" since 1st August 1964. Jamnagar is also home to all the three defense force of India. The town is also famous for its 'Brass Products', 'Bandhani' and handicrafts.

By Air : Flights of Indian Airlines, Jet Airways and Gujarat Airways connecting Jamnagar and Mumbai(Bombay).

By Rail : On the Western Railway with direct connection with Ahmedabad

By Road : State Transport buses and private luxury coaches connects various centres of Gujarat. Jamnagar is 308 kms from Ahmedabad via Rajkot and 92 kms from Gujarat.

PLACES TO VISIT IN JAMNAGAR

Solarium : Known as the Ranjit Institute of Poly-Radio Therapy. A slowly revolving tower provides daylong sunlight. It is open to visitors after working hours.

Bala Hanuman Temple : Since August 1st 1964, there has been a continuous chanting of 'Shri Ram', 'Jai Ram', 'Jai Jai Ram', or 'Ram Dhun' (invocation of Lord Rama) 24 hours a day. This continuous rendition has earned the temple a place in the Guinness Book of Records.

Willingdon Crescent : The most remarkable of Ranjit Singh's construction is Willingdon crescent, the swooping arches of its curved facade overlooking the wide streets of Chelmsford Market.

Rozi And Bedi Ports : These are attractive seaside picnic spots and offer good fishing facilities. Rozi and Bedi Ports are two important ports on the shore of the mighty Arabian Sea. The two seaports offer wonderful sites for picnic. The seashore also provides for excellent opportunities for angling which is a popular pastime at Jamnagar.

Lakhota Fort And Kotha Bastion : In the centre of old Jamnagar, on an island in the middle of the lake, are two magnificent old structures: the Lakhota Fort and the Kotha Bastion. Lakhota Fort is Jamnagar's museum and its terraces display a fine collection of sculptures that span the period from the 9th to 18th century. The Kotha Bastion is Jamnagar's arsenal. One of the most interesting sights is the old well, from which water can be drawn by blowing into a hole on the floor.

Cremation Park : A fascinating place to visit, one can see scenes from the Ramayana, as well as statues of saints and deities.

Mandvi Tower :It is an interesting and very impressive old building, very colourful and vibrant.

Darbar Gadh : The centre of the old town is known as Darbar Gadh. It is a semi-circular gathering place where the former Maharaja of Nawanagar used to hold public audiences. Today, Darbar Gadh is a shopper's delight that stocks a wide variety of exotic tie-and-dye fabrics.
