About Siliguri

Siliguri is situated at the foothills of eastern Himalayas, landscaped by the lush tea gardens of Dooars. The biggest town in North Bengal, Siliguri is the gateway to Darjeeling, Sikkim, Bhutan, Kalimpong, eastern Nepal and Assam. Tourists also use Siliguri as base to visit the Mahananda Wild Life Sanctuary, the rain forests of Dooars, Jaldapara and Gorumara sanctuaries famous for its one-horned rhinoceros, Buxa Tiger Reserve, Mirik hill resort and of course, the tea plantations, world renowned for Darjeeling Tea ('The Champagne of Tea').

HOW TO REACH

By Air : The city has a domestic airport in Bagdogra, which is only 12kms away from the city center and connected by regular flights to Kolkata and Delhi. Several private and public airlines service the airport.

By Rail : New Jalpaiguri is the nearest Railway Station to Siliguri. One of the key Railway Stations in the region is linked to Kolkata (Howrah and Sealdah), Guwahati and many railheads of the country. You may approach Siliguri from any part of the country by rail.

By Road : Siliguri is an important trade center and much of a gateway to the exotic north east of India. An extensive road network connects Siliguri to Kolkata, which is in turn linked to the rest of the country. Siliguri is also connected to Indian state Gangtok, and countries Nepal and Bhutan by road.

PLACES TO VISIT IN SILIGURI

Salugara Monastery : In 1988, His Eminence Kalu Rinpoche began construction of a one-hundred-foot Stupa beside a major thoroughfare in Salugara, near Siliguri. This Stupa contains five types of relics and is an object of veneration.

Orthodox Manufacturing of Tea : Darjeeling Tea is world renowned for its flavour, which is processed for over 100 years through an orthodox process. Connoisseurs all over the world have fancied and valued Darjeeling Tea and call it as "The Champagne of Tea". There are many tea gardens using orthodox manufacturing on Siliguri-Kurseong Road. The tourists can visit plantations and tea processing units.

Mirik : (60 kms, 1769 m) a Hill-resort with an excellent picnic spot, having a 1.25 km long beautiful lake with boating facility.

Gorumara Wild Life Sanctuary : (100 kms), is known for its flora and fauna.The exceptional wild life of this region includes elephant, gaurs, pigs, reptiles, birds and fishes.
